Turfing and new lawns in Bexhill and East Sussex

A lawn is only as good as the ground underneath it. We prepare, level and turf gardens across Bexhill, Eastbourne, Hastings, St Leonards, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge and Sevenoaks, so the lawn establishes quickly and stays even.

It starts below the surface

  • Clearing old grass, weeds and debris from the area
  • Levelling and grading so the lawn drains and mows evenly
  • Improving heavy or poor soil and adding topsoil where needed
  • Raking to a fine, firm surface ready for the turf
  • Laying turf in staggered rows, tight at the joints and trimmed neatly to edges

Drainage and heavy soil

Heavy clay soil is common across parts of East Sussex and Kent, and it holds water. If your lawn floods in winter, turfing alone will not fix it. We look at levels and drainage first, and can combine turfing with drainage work so the new lawn does not end up waterlogged.

Looking after a new lawn

Water

Keep new turf damp, especially in dry weather, until the roots knit into the soil.

Keep off

Leave the lawn alone for the first couple of weeks while it roots.

First cut

Mow when the grass is established, on a high setting, and lower it gradually.

We give you aftercare advice at handover, as turf needs the right care in the first weeks to settle in.

Questions

Turfing & Lawns: common questions

When is the best time to lay turf?

Autumn and spring are ideal because the weather helps it root. It can be laid at other times with extra watering, so ask us about your timing.

How long before I can use my lawn?

Keep off it for the first couple of weeks while the roots establish. We will tell you when it is ready for normal use.

Can you remove my old lawn?

Yes. We can strip and remove old turf and prepare the ground for a new lawn.

Can you fix a boggy lawn?

Often, yes. We look at levels and drainage first, then turf. See our drainage page for what that can involve.
